Alex Sanchez leader of Homies Unidos was arrested yesterday in California by the federal bureau of investigation.
He was charged with questionable federal charges levied against him for of being a “shotcaller” for Mara Salvatrucha (MS) and conspiring to kill Walter Lacinos, an MS member shot and killed in El Salvador in 2006
The Latin American and Caribbean Community Center calls on our members and allies to stay in touch as we closely monitor this situation because of the well respected and internationally work that Alex has been involved in, as reflected in the film Fruits of War screened by the Latin American and Caribbean Community Center’s 4th Annual Latin American and Caribbean Film Festival.
We are well aware of how the authorities in California will attempt to demonize and criminalize so called gang members even when individuals attempt to extract themselves from street organizations. We remember the plight of Stanley Tookie Williams and how he was legally treated, this is why it is important for us to remain in contact as we continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds.
We are going to make sure that social justice allies are aware of the situation, and we are in contact with other organizations, including the US Human Rights Network who are working on gathering and disseminating information.
